Over the years, I have been involved with a variety of projects that explore the impacts of demographic change for the transportation system.
Impacts of Current and Future Demographic Trends on Transportation Planning in Texas This was a joint project with UTSA – Institute for Demographic & Socioeconomic Research and UT-Austin – Center for Transportation Studies (see full report). The project began as a small project to analyze demographic change but ended up being extended into future years. From this, I lead the development of the One-Stop Demographic Analysis Tool for use by transportation planners at the Texas Dept. of Transportation (TxDOT). The work from this project eventually lead to additional research and was summarized (with updated information) in Changing Texas and further expanded in Population Change in the United States.
Estimated Impact of the 2010 Census on the Public Transportation Funding Formula This was a joint project with Texas A&M-Texas Transportation Institute. Projections of urbanized areas were prepared in order to understand the potential impact for public transit funding in Texas.
Understanding Carpool Use Among Hispanics in Texas There had been few analyses of carpool use in general since the late 1970s/early 1980s and few transportation researchers had explored transportation use for different racial/ethnic groups. This was an exploration of carpool use among Hispanics in Texas. I expanded this research exploring transportation use among Hispanic and Asian immigrants in my dissertation: Adapting to car culture: The process of immigrant transportation assimilation in new gateway cities.
This work in transportation has allowed me to provide content to two different encyclopedias. Entries included Automobile Drivers, Elderly; Carpooling; Driver Licensing Rates, and Transit Demographics in the SAGE Encyclopedia of Transportation: Social Science and Policy and Bus Travel, North and South America and Highway/Freeway System, U.S. in the SAGE International Encyclopedia of Travel and Tourism.
